The Askren family served as house parents of the Mae Ka Chan Children's Home in Northern Thailand, an orphanage.  The Mae Ka Chan Children's home currently houses about 70 children ranging in age from 6-17 years old, both girls and boys. Some are Thai children, but the majority are from a variety of different Hill Tribes, including; H'mong, Karen, Akha, Lisu, Lahu, and Yao (also called Mein). The children have come to the home for various reasons, such as the death of one or more parents to Aids, and/or extreme poverty (many children their age are sold into prostitution or forced labor to pay for family expenses).
